Sony FX5 Cinema Camera Body Only (ILME-FX5B)

Sony’s FX5 is the Cinema Line body for filmmakers who want RAW and open gate recording without building a rig. The ILME-FX5B is the body only version and has a 35 mm full frame sensor (35.9 x 24.0 mm), E-mount, 5-axis in-body stabilisation and a 3.5 inch fully articulating touchscreen, in a body that weighs about 643 g without battery.

The headline is what it records inside the body: 16-bit scene-linear X-OCN RAW, along with XAVC HS (H.265) and XAVC S (H.264). At launch it shoots 5K open gate (full frame 3:2) at up to 60p and 4K at up to 120p in a crop mode. Sony plans 5K 120p and 4K 240p for firmware V2.0, due August 2027 or later, so buy it for what it does today, not for those two modes.

Exposure is built around three base ISOs, 800, 4000 and 12800, with 15+ stops of latitude in S-Log3. Fast Hybrid AF uses up to 759 phase detection points and tracks humans, animals and birds. Two card slots take CFexpress Type A or SDXC cards, and the camera has USB-C, full size HDMI, 2.5GBASE-T LAN, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3 and RTMP, RTMPS and SRT streaming, so it can also send footage out without a laptop.

This version does not include the XLR Handle Unit, so audio recording is limited to the camera’s own 3.5 mm mic input and the Multi Interface Shoe. If you need XLR inputs or 96 kHz and 32-bit float audio, which Sony lists for the handle only, choose the ILME-FX5 with XLR Handle Unit package instead. Lenses are not included, and the camera takes any E-mount lens.
