Sony FX5 Cinema Camera with XLR Handle Unit (ILME-FX5)

Sony’s FX5 is the Cinema Line body for filmmakers who want RAW and open gate recording without building a rig. The ILME-FX5 pairs the camera with the XLR Handle Unit and has a 35 mm full frame sensor (35.9 x 24.0 mm), E-mount, 5-axis in-body stabilisation and a 3.5 inch fully articulating touchscreen, in a body that weighs about 643 g without battery.

The headline is what it records inside the body: 16-bit scene-linear X-OCN RAW, along with XAVC HS (H.265) and XAVC S (H.264). At launch it shoots 5K open gate (full frame 3:2) at up to 60p and 4K at up to 120p in a crop mode. Sony plans 5K 120p and 4K 240p for firmware V2.0, due August 2027 or later, so buy it for what it does today, not for those two modes.

Exposure is built around three base ISOs, 800, 4000 and 12800, with 15+ stops of latitude in S-Log3. Fast Hybrid AF uses up to 759 phase detection points and tracks humans, animals and birds. Two card slots take CFexpress Type A or SDXC cards, and the camera has USB-C, full size HDMI, 2.5GBASE-T LAN, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3 and RTMP, RTMPS and SRT streaming, so it can also send footage out without a laptop.

This package includes the XLR Handle Unit. It adds balanced audio inputs to the camera and is what enables 96 kHz and 32-bit float audio recording, a feature Sony lists for the handle only. Bought on its own the handle costs Rs 1,33,990 at launch MRP, so the Rs 5,61,990 package is Rs 81,990 less than buying the body and handle separately. Lenses are not included, and the camera takes any E-mount lens.

Launch MRP is Rs 5,61,990, inclusive of all taxes. Every unit we sell is genuine Indian stock with an official Sony India warranty and a GST invoice.

Key Features

  • 5K Open Gate, Full Frame 3:2: Records the whole 3:2 sensor area up to 5K 60p, so one take can be reframed for wide, vertical and square deliveries.
  • Internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW: Scene-linear RAW to the memory cards, with XAVC HS and XAVC S for lighter files when RAW is more than the job needs.
  • Three Base ISOs With Dual Gain: Base ISO 800, 4000 and 12800 keep noise low from daylight sets to dim venues, with 15+ stops of S-Log3 latitude.
  • XLR Handle Unit Included: Adds XLR audio inputs and enables 96 kHz and 32-bit float recording, which Sony lists for the handle only.
  • 4K 120p for Slow Motion: 4K up to 120p (crop) at launch, with 5K 120p and 4K 240p planned for firmware V2.0 in August 2027 or later.
  • 5-Axis In-Body Stabilisation: Dynamic Active, Active and Standard modes steady handheld shots with any E-mount lens.
  • 759-Point Fast Hybrid AF: Phase detection autofocus with human, animal and bird recognition, plus touch tracking on the 3.5 inch monitor.
  • Dual Card Slots: Each slot takes CFexpress Type A or SDXC UHS-I and UHS-II cards for relay or backup recording.
  • Compact and Light: About 643 g body only, 132.2 x 79.0 x 87.0 mm, small enough for gimbals, drones and tight car interiors.

Advantages

For Documentary and Corporate Crews:
RAW and open gate in a body this size means a one person crew can shoot interviews, B-roll and run and gun in one kit.

For Wedding and Event Filmmakers:
Open gate recording and 4K 120p let you deliver horizontal films and vertical reels from the same shoot, with 12800 base ISO for dark halls.

For Owner Operators Moving Up From Mirrorless:
S-Log3, timecode and RAW from a compact body, with an E-mount you may already own lenses for.

For Rental Houses and Production Companies:
A second camera that matches the Cinema Line look beside an FX6 or FX3, with SRT and RTMP streaming for live feeds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between the Sony FX5 and the FX5B?
A: The ILME-FX5B is the body only. The ILME-FX5 is the same camera sold with the XLR Handle Unit. The handle also enables 96 kHz and 32-bit float audio recording, which Sony lists for the handle only.
Q: What is included in the box?
A: One NP-SA100 battery, a BC-SAD118 battery charger, a body cap, an accessory shoe cap and a VF terminal protect cap, plus the XLR Handle Unit.
Q: Does the Sony FX5 record RAW internally?
A: Yes. It records 16-bit scene-linear X-OCN RAW to its memory cards. It also outputs RAW over HDMI to a compatible recorder.
Q: What frame rates does it shoot at launch?
A: 5K open gate (full frame 3:2) at up to 60p, and 4K at up to 120p in a full frame crop mode. Sony plans 5K 120p and 4K 240p for firmware V2.0, due August 2027 or later.
Q: Is a lens included?
A: No. The FX5 has a Sony E-mount, so it takes native E-mount lenses and, with adapters, many other mounts. Tell us what you shoot and we can suggest a lens.

Q: Does the price include GST, and do I get a GST invoice?
A: Sony India lists the MRP as inclusive of all taxes, and every order from us ships with a GST invoice for warranty and input tax credit.
